Search Duration (June '22 Release)

When creating custom dashboards or reports in the Analytics platform, users can now add Search Duration as a filter or dimension!

Search Duration allows you to analyze traffic based on the amount of time (in seconds) that users spend viewing a search results page.

While Clicks and Click Through Rate (CTR) are two of the most important metrics when tracking engagement, Search Duration has become increasingly important as featured snippets are adopted by more users. Therefore, there are cases where a direct answer may be the desired result rather than a clickable CTA or link.

On the roadmap, we are also planning to add a metric for “Average Search Duration”, so that users can build reports to show information like aggregate duration by search term or duration of searches over time.

Note: In order to view this dimension for most searches, the frontend of your Search experience must be on SDK version 1.14 or later.

Turn on the Summer '22: New Dimensions / Filters / Metrics in Analytics (early access) account feature to use this feature during the Early Access period. This feature will automatically be turned on for all accounts at General Availability for the Summer '22 Release.

Hi Micaela, this is awesome! I’ll definitely be using this to learn more about my users’ activity. Is there an option to also apply this value as a metric to calculate the average search duration by search term?

Hi Coleen,

As of now, Search Duration can only be used as a dimension or filter. However, the Product team is planning on adding it as a metric option for a future release. I will let you know when there is an update!
