How to Create a Heat Map of your Answers Searches by User Location in Excel

Hi community,

I wanted to share a powerful way of visualize your Answers search analytics: In Excel, you can create a heat map using the coordinates associated with your Answers search logs.

Follow these steps:

1. Export Search Logs

Start by exporting your search logs.

2. Manipulate your File

In your output file, remove any unneeded rows (e.g. Configuration Label: STAGING and Traffic: INTERNAL).

Next, copy the following columns into a new Excel file (make sure the new file is an .xlsx file): Search Term, Search ID and Lat, Long. Split the Lat, Long into two separate columns by using Data > Text to Columns

Create an ordinal column that simply counts your rows from top to bottom.

Your file should look like this:

3. Create Map

Select all of your data and click Insert > 3D Map > Open 3D Maps. If you don’t see that option check here for more info.

All set! You can now play with different layout options in the map settings. Pro tip: You can add Search Term as a filter to drill-down into specific search queries.
