Step 2: IP Addresses in Yext
Forms of IP Addresses
Whenever an IP Address is collected by Yext it is stored in either one of two forms:
Raw IP Address
The actual IP Address of a given user, e.g. 50.229.16.163. This is what you’d find if you Googled “What is my IP address”?
Hashed IP Address
A hashed IP Address is an obfuscated or anonymised version of a given user’s IP Address, e.g., cf1f1ddd0c62c1c6e71e508a6e1b38ed, based on a one-way hashing algorithm.
By storing the Hashed IP Address, Yext can still identify anomalous traffic without being able to tie it back to a particular Raw IP Address.
IP Address Retention for Search, Knowledge Tags and Pages
Product | Raw IP Address Retention Period | Hashed IP Address Retention Period | Can be Disabled? |
---|---|---|---|
Search | 7 days | Indefinitely | No |
Knowledge Tags | 1 day | Indefinitely | No |
Pages | 1 day | Indefinitely | No |
IP Address Usage for Search, Knowledge Tags and Pages
Search
For our Search product, IP Address can be used as a way to segment traffic as Internal, External or Bot traffic. Check out the Internal Traffic Type reference doc for more info.
Internal traffic is any traffic that originates from an IP Address related to Yext or the customer themselves (based on a list of IP Addresses that can be specified by the customer).
Identifying traffic that is internal allows customers to isolate any Yext or non-consumer searches from their search analytics.
Conversely, External traffic is any traffic that does not originate from the above sources i.e. real traffic from the customer’s users.
In addition, IP Address can be used to identify the general location of traffic (e.g. City, Country and Region) with a general City-Level degree of accuracy (i.e. city center, for instance, Brooklyn, New York).
This is done by using a code library to do a “reverse lookup” on an IP Address to identify its location.
Below is an example of how this is done using the tool provided by this website :
Knowledge Tags
For our Knowledge Tags product, IP Address is used as a way to exclude Bot traffic.
Pages
For our Pages product, IP Address is used as a way to exclude Bot traffic.
Pages also offers the ability to disable Analytics tracking altogether if a customer is concerned about local data privacy legislation.
