I’ve been exploring my own dashboard to better understand how to use the analytics tool to try to narrow down the answer to Question 3 of 3 in the Report Builder & Custom Insights unit quiz in the Analytics section of the course.
The question is: “Which of the following is a use case for sparklines? (Select all that apply)”
Here is what I’m thinking for each option given, but I keep getting the answer wrong so I am stuck:
-
Clicks by Search Term - This would make sense if there were multiple search terms we were comparing, BUT this option is greyed out in my own dashboard and can’t be selected as a column for the sparklines graph so I don’t think it should be checked, but I don’t know why.
-
Conversion value day by day - This is obviously wrong because, “You can add sparklines to any insight that is not dimensioned by day (as sparklines are already a metric by day)”
-
Week of Week searches - I do believe this is a great example of a use case for sparklines.
-
Sessions by normalized search term. - Again, “search term” is greyed out on my own dashboard for sparklines.
Hi Tanya,
That’s great! I’m glad you’ve been exploring your own dashboard to help with this!
You’re correct that Clicks by Search Term and Sessions by normalized search term would make sense as a use case for Sparklines. We just need to figure out why this option isn’t appearing for you. Sparklines are pulled from Metrics (vs Dimensions), so that may be what is causing the issue.
Can you send over a screenshot of what you see in your account? For example, to set up Clicks by Search Term you would do the following (and then Clicks appears as the column to add Sparklines to):
This also applies to Sessions by normalized search term.
For something like Searches week over week , you wouldn’t need Sparklines for that, you’d be better off just using a line graph in this instance so you can clearly see the trends and movement in volume over time.
So it would look something like this for Listings:
Or this for Answers:
Let me know if that helps, or if there is any other info I can provide!

It’s working now. I’m not sure why it was greyed out before, but I must have skipped a step. Thank you for the additional assistance.
